OBEY Survey

I wrote a  survey for first hand research for my writing as I wanted to know people opinions on OBEY. The survey helped slightly but I think the questions could have been written better. I was still able to include the survey in my writing which is the main thing. It was interesting to learn what people nowadays thinks of OBEY because to me, he has had his 15 minutes and his designs can get quite dated.

GRAD

I came across GRAD in the summer was really keen to ask them questions and possibly visit. It's a Russian based art gallery in London. It would of been really interesting to get some answers about Russian graphic design from the art gallery.

I emailed them in the summer and didn't hear anything about.
The other day me and Aimee decided we both need to go to London to get some research for our dissertation. She needed to speak to a couple of studios and I needed to go to Grad.
I emailed saying what time I'd be there, unfortunately due to travel we were a bit late. There was no one to speak to but I handed my questions in and was promised an email with their answers. They never emailed back but it was still good to go to the gallery, look at the art and what's concerning Russian artists at the moment.

Chapter Three Plan + Research

Chapter three plan

OBEY –
Started out with audience was anyone and everyone, communication experiment
Later it turned into politics – Obama audience. Young voters, cool kids, manipulating. Wouldn’t work for an older audience – figures and stats

Brand identity –

Has making it a consumer item lessened the power and pureity of Obey? Or is it deserved
What do people think of obey now its everywhere and attainable - Clothing lines etc,

Other Artists with such concerns –

Link to constructivism and photo montage

Barbara Kruger and Supreme’s use

  - same design – copying? Same demographic as obey

This chapter is concerning the modern practise of Russian graphic design techniques. After concentrating on OBEY a lot, and discussing Barbara Kruger, there will be links to other current designers. Hopefully using first hand research in the way of interviews and possibly a survey if it necessary. This chapter will talk about constructivism even more as that is the movement I am most interested in.

Chapter Two Plan

Chapter Two Plan

The tactics of design

Identity – Russia - Red, bold, sans serif, images of leaders
America – Red and blue, the fear of communism
British – browns, natural colours, the people in it

Tone – Russia – powerful, direct
America – Fear of communism, the threat was big
British – Question, get the people involved

Message – Russia – Communism is great
America – The threat is real and is scary
British – Everyone needs to be clever and help

Timeline of identity.

Beginning of rev – full of action. Russia.
Warmed down and became censored.
Fake images of Russia.

This chapter is where the triangulation will mainly take place. It concentrates on the three big powers of the time, America, Britain and Russia. Comparing the propaganda means that I will get a good understanding of the techniques used. I will understand the target audience, the message, the way they convey the message, the reality of the propaganda and tone of voice.

Looking at Cold War propaganda mainly, due to moving along the timeline. The Cold War was when propaganda was most important because of the threat of Communism. It was a terrifying idea for westerners, so there was quite a lot of material created.

To demonstrate the research and information found while working on the dissertation. Mainly looking at propaganda and how powerful that is. Can the same design style work within a modern setting and possibly with no real message? Does the design still have power?

Background/Considerations

OBEY and how he has designed his work in a Russian style but made it work well
